The Facts Behind Feeling Good: Endorphins

After the gym, a run, or kicking around a ball in a park, most people feel pretty good, and I don’t mean just the muscle gain or fat loss aspect. I’m talking about feeling happier, more content and pleasant, all the emotions we wish we could harness all day everyday. It all comes down to endorphins, and the roll exercise plays in their usage and storage.

Endorphins are neurotransmitters in your brain that do a whole lot more than simply help you with happiness. The release of endorphins has been medically proven to actually relieve stress and anxiety. In fact, the regular release of endorphins through exercise can fully change your mood and give you more self-confidence. It can relax you, receive mild depression, and shed those daily tensions we all build up throughout the day. Essentially, endorphins are pretty darn awesome when it comes to our mental health.

Personally, I think the best thing about all this is how easy it is to get that release of endorphins. Virtually any physical exercise, from jogging to yoga, will increase the production of endorphins in the brain, making you feel better on a number of levels. It certainly gives a strong case for working in exercise to the daily routine.

Try to set aside a half hour each day where you engage in physical activity. It can be the gym or bootcamp class, but it can also be a hike or cycling around the neighborhood. We all have stresses and tensions built up, but knowing that a healthy active lifestyle can curb those negative feelings is a boost to what is so awesome about fitness.
