Can you workout too much?

In my opinion, yes!

I have noticed over the years that historically I have been exercising too much. Forcing myself to run, or take a class everyday was what I did for years. Yes, I was burning calories and getting the good endorphins from the workouts; however, I was constantly exhausted, weak, and I was starving all the time. My sleep was ok, only because I was that exhausted, but more often than not, I was dreading dragging myself out of bed the next morning to get that workout in. That is absolutely no way to live!

I was also obsessed with the scale and was militant with what I was eating – not eating enough for sure with the amount of exercise I was doing. Truth is my workouts were suffering, I didn’t feel good, and got to the point of hating my workouts. When I started taking one or two rest days a week – believe me the hardest part of this was the mental chatter and quieting it – my whole world changed. I felt rested, I wanted to get up and workout, and I started seeing better results. Another key component was mixing up my workouts. Now I do cardio crossfit, barre classes, pilates, boxing – you name it! So much fun! Best part is I look forward to my rest days, because I know my workout will be awesome the next day.
