Trick or Treat? The “Trick” in Healthy Treats

If you haven’t heard of High Fructose Corn Syrup (or HFCS) you’re in for a bit of a shock! This highly engineered modified sugar product (notice how many words it takes to say it… not good) is infecting “health” snacks all over the States. Scientific research has shown that HFCS is a major cause of obesity and even diabetes, not even the most conservative nutritional experts can argue with that. But why is it in so many products that we eat?

Here’s why…

The simple answer is that it’s cheap! The U.S. government taxes sugar at such a rate, HFCS is easily the smarter option for companies looking to increase profits and reduce costs.

Now, you may be aware that HFCS is in a lot of candy products, obviously! But what you may not know is that this horrible sugar substitute makes an appearance in a lot of “health food” and “diet” snacks. Here are some of the most surprising examples:yoplait_v2

  • Smart Start Healthy Heart (Cereal)
  • Kellogg’s brand cereals (Yup! Even Special K)
  • Yoplait Yogurts
  • Sara Lee “Heart Healthy” Whole Grain Breads
  • Zone Perfect Bars
  • Power Bars
  • Orangina Soda
  • Heinz Ketchup

HFCS is everywhere, but have no fear, there are loads of fantastic alternates out there. Just look at the ingredients label and make sure it doesn’t say High Fructose Corn Syrup, or any other pseudonyms like: Maize syrup, Glucose syrup, Glucose/fructose syrup, Tapioca syrup, Dahlia syrup, Fruit fructose, Crystalline fructose.

Happy eating and stick to those real, organic and healthy treats with no tricks!
