New to Running? Avoid These 5 Pitfalls

We see people of all sizes and shapes pounding the pavement every day. Running has definitely taken off! You can see it with the any number of races going on each weekend as well. You’ve got everything from 5k to 100 mile races depending on your fitness level and willingness to train. How do these runners stay committed and determined? Running isn’t easy, it’s challenging on the body and the mind. If you’re a newbie here are some tips to avoid to ensure your endeavor into running is a lasting one.

What you don’t want to be doing:

1. Slow down, there’s no rush.
There is no reason to run like your pants are on fire! Sure, sprinting is a great way to mix up your training, for now though, as a beginner, start slowly. Guess what, it’s ok to walk. Run 5, walk 1, or something liWomens-sports-wrist-watchke that until you get your endurance built up. You are still a runner if you do walk intervals.

2. Keeping an eye on the clock.
We have the time readily available constantly in today’s world. From your watch, to treadmill, to phone pretty much anywhere you look you can see the time. If you are using a GPS device then add that to the list as well. Although with a GPS device, constant looking could hinder your performance.  Best advice, put it on and go for your run, period. Yes, you may want to beat last weeks time, if you need to check do so sparingly, you will be happier in the long run. (No pun intended!)

3. Same thing tomorrow.
Variety is the spice of life, and when it comes to running and routes, it is no different. Keep it fresh out there. Instead of running left out your front door, go right! Take that street you always drive by. Make it a habit to switch up your running path. The time will go more quickly, and if experience says anything, you will have a faster time!

4. Muster through.
Running is tough and painful at times – the trick is to know when it is actually painful vs. uncomfortable from reaching a new fitness level. Listen closely to your body. Are you thirsty? Get some water. Feeling tight in your hips? Stop and stretch. The last thing you want to sideline yourself straight out of the gate. Devise a great pre and post stretching routine too, you and your body will be elated in the long run.

5. She’s running faster than I am.
Who cares if someone just passed you on the path. It has zero bearing on you. Everyone has their own pace, challenges in any moment and level of fitness. It can be fun to run with a buddy who is a bit faster than you – its a fun way to challenge and build your endurance. Keep it light and fun though. Focus on the run, remember it isn’t a race today.
