Paleo is a big hit among fitness lovers lately. The reason Paleo is so terrific for people trying to lose or maintain weight loss is that it centers on whole foods, lots of fruits and vegetables and mostly good fats, like avocado and nuts. It’s not hard to find things to eat on the Paleo diet plan.
That’s the good news. Yet, when you’re tired of smash avocado on spelt toast, or a handful of nuts it’s time to think outside of the box for fun Paleo snacks you can grab on the go. When you are trying to stick to a very specific plan, it’s always vital to be able to make things as least complicated as possible, so you stick to the plan. Makes sense doesn’t it? Otherwise you might find yourself starving and headed to the first fast food restaurant you see. Here are 5 outside of the box Paleo approved snacks that you can easily take with you.
Snack #5: Baked Apple Cinnamon Chips
This is an easy snack to make ahead at home. All you do is slice up your favorite type of apple, any kind will do, and bake them in the oven with a sprinkle of cinnamon for 45 minutes at 225 degrees. If you have a parchment paper on a baking sheet, use that or if you have a silpat non-stick mat that works too. Either way, once they are cool and dry this is a treat you can pop into plastic bags to throw in your handbag or backpack.
Snack #4: Spicy Pumpkin Seeds
Pumpkin seeds are full of protein, copper, zinc, and magnesium so they are an excellent source of nutrition. You can buy ready made organic pumpkin seeds from your local health food store, or make them yourself if you are feeling industrious. If you buy some, go for the plain ones that you can season yourself with a little chili powder or cinnamon for a spicy treat that revs your metabolism up the right way.
Snack #3: Eggplant Jerky
If you don’t love eggplant, this is going to sound a little gross. But if you are fan, this tasty make it yourself treat is going to be your new favorite. Who knew that you could make healthy vegetable jerky with eggplant? If you don’t have a dehydrator, you can just use your oven on the lowest setting for about 8 to 10 hours. Cut the eggplant into thin strips and marinate them overnight first in some balsamic vinegar. Season with a dash of sea salt before placing them in the oven.
Snack #2: Proscuitto Berries
A little bit of fruit and protein is going to go a long way in keeping you satisfied. That’s why prosciutto wrapped strawberries taste delicious together. Secure with a toothpick if you need to and place five of these treats in a BPA-free plastic container. If you don’t have strawberries on hand, you can substitute melon just as easily.
Snack #1: A Big Mac
Just kidding! We just wanted to make sure you were really paying attention. For this last snack you can’t go wrong with seasoned curried cashews. This is a spicy and nutty way to keep your hunger at bay, but indulge in some nuts other than those raw almonds you are already tired of. Buy plain cashews and season them yourself with a spicy curry mixture and some warm honey. A touch of salty sweetness is just want you need in the perfect snack.
