It’s remarkable how a little bit goes such a long way with spices, and in honor of that fact, I have compiled the 7 healthiest, energy boosting, delicious spices to start adding to your own home cooking.

  1. Sage: This herb is actually considered one of the healthiest spices around, if not the top dog. Sage can aid your recovery from sore throats and cold symptoms as well as preserve your memory. Some preliminary research has suggested that sage can even help with the early stages of Alzheimers.
    • Try with sweet potatoes, summer squash, and walnuts.
  2. Rosemary: Every wondered why those ancient Grecian scholars wore garlands of rosemary on their heads? Well, it wasn’t just an awesome sense of head fashion, in fact t’s because rosemary actually helps us focus and perform better with memory and alertness tests, enhancing mental focus. Rosemary is also an effective way to fight off bacteria and even prevent food from spoiling.
    • Try with baby new potatoes, pork loin, or baked into flatbreads.
  3. Turmeric: This spice, most famously from India, is applied to wounds to aid healing. Now, I’m more into putting in into food instead of wounds. Turmeric is a fantastic way to add flavor, while helping your body reduce gastric inflammation. Turmeric can also help inhibit tumors as well as receive pain for those with arthritis.
    • Try roasting broccoli and cauliflower with turmeric for a delectable vegetarian side
  4. Chile Pepper: My personal favorite. As a California native, chile pepper has been a staple in my diet since birth. Chile Pepper boosts your metabolism, and can help with fat loss. There is also evidence to support that chile pepper helps reduce the risk of ulcers by strengthening our stomach cellist reduce infection.
    • Try adding chile pepper to an egg frittata or chicken and vegetable kebabs.
  5. Ginger: Ginger is a well-deserving spice on the list because there are so many health benefits to it use in nutrition. The most prominent effects are that ginger can help soothe an upset stomach and fight arthritis pain. However, ginger has also been found to help with healthy-heart regulation making an even stronger case for it being one of the top spices.
    • Try using ginger as a marinade with meats like lamb, or pork loin.
  6. Cinnamon: cinnamon-metabolismOften overlooked as a healthy spice because of it’s close connection with sweet treats and candy, cinnamon is interestingly one of the best way to stabilize blood sugar, helping reduce the risk of Type 2 Diabetes. Cinnamon can also be a good tool for lowering indigestion pains.
    • Try mixing cinnamon in with some berries and greek yogurt for a healthy snack.
  7. Saffron: Saffron is what I like to call the bourgeoise of the spices, mainly because it isn’t exactly the cheapest. However, what saffron lacks in affordability, it makes up for in healthy benefits. For all you ladies out there, saffron is one of the best natural ways to help with PMS pains and symptoms. Saffron is also a mood lifter, elevating the way you feel and act with those around you.
    • Try saffron with risotto, one of my favorite dishes.
